Development of a Comprehensive Staff Development Program About Outpatient Diabetes Clinic Care for Patients With Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

The purpose of this DNP project was to evaluate if focused staff education about the many aspects of outpatient diabetes care has the potential to increase knowledge and impact attitudes about diabetes in staff providing care to patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Diabetes is a disease with wide ranging implications, in terms of cost, consumer health, and quality of life, for populations worldwide, including the United States. It is critical that staff who participate in the care of patients with diabetes mellitus have a role-specific educational foundation to support their contribution to patient care. The researcher conducted a quantitative, nonexperimental design over a two-month period to determine the relationship between staff education about outpatient diabetes care and the impact on staff knowledge and awareness about diabetes in the pediatric setting. A five-part educational series was provided to staff nurses and medical assistants who work in the outpatient diabetes clinic. Orem’s self-care theory provided the theoretical framework for the project. The DKT and DAS were used to evaluate preeducation and posteducation changes because of the intervention. The results did not indicate significant changes in knowledge or attitudes. The lack of significant results was likely due to factors such as a small sample size for posteducation surveys and the choice of analysis for the Diabetes Attitude Scale. The project holds continued relevance and potential for staff development programs and team mentoring in the outpatient diabetes care clinic setting. Keywords: type 1 diabetes mellitus, type 2 diabetes mellitus, staff development, mentorship, interprofessional collaboration

Organizing for Economic Empowerment of Battered Women: Women\u27s Savings Accounts

    Get PDF
When describing reasons for remaining with or returning to an abusive partner, many women mention economic dependence on their abuser. Few battered women, especially those who are poor, have the economic resources necessary to live independently. Additionally, battered women are commonly isolated from financial resources lacking ready access to cash, checking accounts, or charge accounts. Creating strategies that address financial well-being is essential to addressing the issue ofdomestic violence. This article discusses a collaboration among domestic violence service providers in the St. Louis, Missouri region created to promote the economic development of low-income batteredwomen. The collaboration has culminated in formalized economic service provisions including economiceducation and credit counseling; women’s matched savings accounts; and economic advocacy and support services

Condoms are more effective when applied by males: a study of young black males in the United States

    No full text
PurposeTo determine, among a sample of young black male (YBM), whether female application of male condoms for penile–vaginal intercourse would be associated with higher or lower rates of breakage or slippage. A secondary aim was to investigate if higher rates of breakage or slippage were associated with increased odds of acquiring chlamydia and/or gonorrhea.MethodsA cross-sectional study of 412 YBM, aged 15 to 23 years, was conducted in three US cities located in the Southern United States.ResultsAmong YBM reporting frequent female application of condoms, 43.5% reported one or more instance of breakage or slippage, compared with those reporting less frequent female application (27.2%, P = .003). Among YBM reporting one or more event of breakage or slippage, 25.4% tested positive for chlamydia and/or gonorrhea. In contrast, among those not reporting breakage or slippage, 17.2% tested positive (P = .047).ConclusionsFindings suggest that educational and behavioral interventions should seek to improve young women's skills relative to condom application and use. Further studies could also investigate whether intervention efforts should encourage some YBM to be responsible for their own condom application

Shaking Up Traditional Training With Lynda.com

Supporting the diverse technology training needs on campus while resources continue to dwindle is a challenge many of us continue to tackle. Institutions from small liberal arts campuses to large research universities are providing individualized training and application support 24/7 by subscribing to the lynda.com Online Training Library(r) and marketing the service to various combinations of faculty, staff and students. As a supplemental service on most of our campuses, lynda.com has allowed us to extend support to those unable to attend live lab-based training, those who want advanced level training, those who want training on specialized applications, and those who want to learn applications that are not in high demand. The service also provides cost effective professional development opportunities for everyone on campus, from our own trainers and technology staff who are developing new workshops, learning new software versions or picking up new areas of expertise from project management to programming, to administrative and support staff who are trying to improve their skills in an ever-tighter economic environment. On this panel discussion, you will hear about different licensing approaches, ways of raising awareness about lynda.com on our campuses, lessons learned through implementation, reporting capabilities, and advice we would give for other campuses looking to offer this service

Mortgage Lending: Is Gender a Factor?

    Get PDF
In promoting well-being for women and female-headed households, social policy analysts are increasingly attending to wealth accumulation rather than focusing solely on income. Homeownership equity is a form of wealth that may be especially helpful for low-income women. This paper analyzes 1992 Home Mortgage Disclosure Act data for the city and county of St. Louis. Our primary hypothesis was that women, controlling for marital status, income, and race, would be more likely to be denied home loans. The findings from this data set contradict our hypothesis and suggest that men are slightly more likely than women to be denied mortgage loans. Discussion centers around reasons for this counter-intuitive finding and calls for more research on these matters
